After coaching golfers for more than 30 years, I can tell you this — there are three mistakes that almost every experienced golfer makes with their driver. They’re subtle, but they kill distance, consistency, and confidence off the tee. The good news? Once you fix them, everything changes. You’ll hit it farther without swinging harder. Mistake #1: Setting Up Like You’re Hitting an Iron Most golfers — especially those who’ve been playing for years — use nearly the same setup for every club. It feels logical, right? One swing, one setup. But your driver is completely different from your irons. It’s the only club in your bag that’s always teed up. That means your swing and your setup need to adjust. Here’s what to do: position the ball forward — off the logo on your shirt or the inside of your lead arm. Take a mini step toward the target, then a big step away from it. That simple move ensures the ball is forward enough to promote an upward strike. Add a slight tilt — bump your lead hip gently over your lead foot. This sets your upper body behind the ball, not on top of it. When you do this right, you’re in the perfect position to make a powerful, upward strike. Mistake #2: A Low, Flat Backswing Here’s another classic issue: most golfers swing the driver too flat — too low and around their body. That’s because the driver is longer, and it feels natural to swing it flatter. But that motion robs you of height, power, and control. Instead, I want you to feel like your lead arm is lifting up and back. High hands equal high power. A quick drill you can do right now: stand tall, extend your lead arm, and lift it slightly higher than you think. That’s the motion you want in your driver backswing. If your hands are high at the top, the club can drop naturally into a powerful slot on the downswing — leading to longer, straighter drives. Mistake #3: Falling Back Through Impact This one’s the silent killer. You make a good backswing, start down, and then… you hang back on your trail leg. The result? A weak, glancing blow that either balloons high or slices hard. Here’s your fix: when you finish your swing, your knees should be touching. That simple checkpoint ensures your weight transfers through the ball and into your front side — the key to solid, compressed contact. Bonus Tip: The High Handle Finish Want to add a little more distance? Focus on finishing with your handle high. Too many golfers swing “around” their body and finish low, which causes them to hit down or across the ball. When you finish high, the club works up through the strike zone, promoting that ideal upward launch. If you tend to slice, here’s the tweak: let the toe of your club rotate slightly over through impact. You don’t need to force it — just allow the face to release naturally. That tiny adjustment will square the face and help straighten your drives instantly.
