My baby Bobby, I’m so sorry. I will love you forever. 12/12/2012 – 06/05/2025 Bobby wasn’t “just a dog.” He was my shadow. When he started changing, I explained it away. He was tired. He ignored his bowl. Some days it barely moved. Other days, he drank constantly. Sometimes he would sniff the water and walk away, then suddenly care when I refilled it. I told myself he was getting older. When we found out it was kidney disease, I kept replaying those little moments. Not because a water bowl causes kidney disease. But hydration was one of the daily things I had treated like a checkbox. Bowl full? Done. After Bobby passed, I swore I would never get another dog. Then a tiny puppy came into my life, and every time he walked past his bowl, my stomach dropped. So I started researching the small everyday things I could do better this time. That’s when I found an article written by a vet that made me see water differently. It explained how powerful a dog’s nose is, why still water may not smell fresh to them, and why moving water can feel more natural. Suddenly Bobby made more sense to me. He ignored a full bowl, then perked up when I refilled it. He loved the hose. He seemed more interested when the water moved. A full bowl only means water is available. It does not mean your dog is choosing to drink enough from it. Still water sits all day. It warms up. Hair falls in. Saliva collects around the edges. That slimy film starts forming. Even when it looks clean to us, it may not feel fresh to them. The article also explained why some fountains are not automatically better. Plastic can hold odor. Weak filters, loud pumps, and tiny corners can create new problems. I’m not saying any of this prevents kidney disease. Nothing can bring Bobby back, and I would never pretend that. I’m sharing it because I wish someone had made me think about his water sooner.
