He kept his season in three places, and none of them talked to each other. There was the stack of index cards in the glove box, most of them written at red lights on the drive home from practice. There was the notes app on his phone, where the good ideas from film sessions went to be buried under grocery lists. And there was the legal pad on the kitchen table, the one he opened after the house went quiet, where he planned tomorrow's practice while yesterday's plan sat somewhere in the recycling. He was not a disorganized coach. He was a busy one. Two kids, a full teaching load, a varsity program, and a JV coach who needed him at every practice. The ideas came constantly. At a stoplight, watching the team two towns over run a baseline set he wanted to steal. In the stands at a Saturday tournament, seeing how a zone broke down against a high post entry. In the quiet at 11 PM, realizing his best defender had never once been asked to guard the inbounder. Every one of those ideas was worth something. Almost none of them survived the week. In January his team faced a press that had beaten them in December. He remembered solving it. He remembered the feeling of drawing it up. He spent forty minutes before practice looking through the glove box, the phone, and the legal pad. It was gone. That is the part nobody warns a new coach about. The problem is never a lack of good thinking. It is that good thinking arrives in small moments, in the car, on the couch, at the table, and those moments do not come with a filing system. The Playbook Journal is the filing system. One book that holds the entire season. Each idea written the moment it shows up, then built on the next time the book opens. The rough sketch from November becomes the full set in December and the answer in January, because it never left the page. When the press came back in February, he did not go looking. He opened the the book to a page he had already written, and the answer was waiting.
