1976, Jamaica. King Tubby twists a knob and a B-side becomes a composition. This was the year dub stopped being filler and started being its own art form. Tape delay, spring reverb, ghost vocals floating through filters. The Revolutionaries laid the rhythm. Tubby, Perry and Jammy rebuilt it from scratch. We dug into it. The full piece is on the ROVR app a new edition every Thursday, 8pm. Download ROVR free.

What the video says

First 3 seconds: “This week's Rover Research special focuses on 1976 Jamaica.”

This week's Rover Research special focuses on 1976 Jamaica. The year dub music reaches maturity. For many, it claimed its golden age. No longer just the filler for B-sides, dub experiments from King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Lee Scratch Perry and others were now sought after as compositions in their own right. These B-side versions took the studio band rhythm tracks into a spiritual realm with a unique musical cosmology tied to Rastafarianism and roots reggae. House bands such as the Revolutionaries and the Aggravators would provide the production team material for the expert dub mixers to perform live mixdowns using tape delay, filters, test tone oscillator bleeds, and the all-important trademark spring reverb. Dub's outer space aesthetic provided an escapist realm from which to find respite from the political turmoil of mid-70s Jamaica, torn by colonial legacy and Cold War politics. Outside the motherland, dub set up base in the diaspora, as large cities like New York and Canada all scant for the dub rhythms. Rover Research presents Dub 1976.
