Ecommerce competitor analysis: a free framework (2026)

A repeatable, free way to analyze an ecommerce competitor — traffic, ads, products, offers and tech stack — and turn what you find into decisions for your own store.

Updated October 16, 2026

Good ecommerce competitor analysis is a repeatable framework, not a one-off snoop: size the competitor, map what they sell, study their ads, read their tech stack, find the niche pattern, and turn it into decisions. You can run the whole thing free with AdLibrarySpy and Meta’s Ad Library. Here’s the framework.

The six-step framework

  1. 1

    Size the competitor

Start with measured traffic and its trend — reach and momentum. Is it growing, flat or fading? You can’t see revenue, but traffic plus ad spend tells you the scale.

  2. 2

    Map what they sell

Look at the catalog and prices, and which products they advertise hardest — that’s where their revenue concentrates.

  3. 3

    Study their ads

Read the live Meta ads: the angles, the offers, and which have run longest (the proven winners). The landing pages show how they sell.

  4. 4

    Read their tech stack

The apps and pixels reveal how they operate — reviews, upsell, subscriptions, email, and which ad platforms they retarget on.

  5. 5

Find the pattern across the niche

Compare several competitors. Products, offers and angles that recur across scaling stores are the niche’s proven plays — not one store’s fluke.

  6. 6

    Turn it into decisions

Translate findings into your own moves: a product to test, an offer structure to adapt, a channel to enter, an app to add. Analysis only pays off when it changes what you do.

Questions

What is ecommerce competitor analysis?
Systematically studying a competitor’s public signals — traffic, ads, products, offers and tech stack — to understand how they win and to inform your own store’s decisions. It uses public data, not private account access.
Can I do it for free?
Yes. AdLibrarySpy shows measured traffic, live Meta ads, products and tech per store for free; Meta’s Ad Library confirms live ads. That covers the core framework without a paid tool.
What can’t competitor analysis tell you?
Private numbers — exact revenue, conversion rate, ad spend and margins. Treat traffic, ad activity and longevity as directional signals, and never trust a tool that claims exact competitor sales.
How often should I analyze competitors?
Size them once, then track the leaders so you see new products and ads as they launch — ongoing beats a one-time snapshot. AdLibrarySpy’s free Brandtracker does the tracking for you.
