Ad library

An ad library is a public, searchable database of ads running on a platform, letting anyone see which ads a brand or page is currently showing.

What is an ad library?

An ad library is a public archive where an advertising platform shows the ads that pages and advertisers are running. The best known is the Meta Ad Library, which covers Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network. Google and TikTok run their own versions too. These libraries were created for transparency, so the public can see who is advertising and what they say. For online stores and media buyers, they are also a goldmine of research. You can study a competitor’s offers, hooks, formats and landing pages, and see how long their ads have been running, all without paying for any tool.

How an ad library works

You search by brand name, page or keyword, choose a country and ad category, and the library lists matching ads with their creative, copy and start date. In the Meta Ad Library, you mostly see active ads. Reach and spend ranges are shown only for ads delivered in the European Union, under the Digital Services Act, and for political or social issue ads. For example, searching a skincare brand might show 40 active ads, several started months ago. Long-running ads are a useful hint, because advertisers rarely keep paying for ads that lose money, though it is not proof of profit.

When to use an ad library

An ad library is useful before launching a product, when planning new creatives, or when a competitor suddenly grows. It helps you spot common angles in a niche, see which formats brands lean on, and find offers you need to match. The main benefits are that it is free, official and up to date. The limits are real, though. Outside the EU and political ads, you will not see spend, reach or results, and search tools are basic. You also cannot easily see trends across many brands at once, which is where dedicated research tools add value.

Best practices for ad library research

Search competitors by their page name rather than keywords, since keyword search misses many ads. Note how long each ad has run and how many variations of the same concept exist, as repeated versions often signal a winner. Save examples by angle, such as price, problem, testimonial or founder story, so you build a swipe file you can learn from. Click through to landing pages to see the full funnel, not just the ad. Check several countries, because brands often test differently by market. AdLibrarySpy adds to this by showing competitors’ live Meta ads alongside their stores’ measured traffic and best sellers, for free.

Ad library vs ad spy tool

An ad library is the official database run by the platform itself, such as Meta or TikTok. It is free and accurate, but built for transparency, so filtering and analysis are limited. An ad spy tool is a third-party product that collects ads, often from several platforms, and adds search filters, sorting, saved collections and extra data like store traffic or product information. In short, the ad library is the raw source, and an ad spy tool is a research layer on top that makes it faster to find patterns and winning ads across many brands.
