Reach

Reach is the number of unique people who saw your ad or content at least once during a period, no matter how many times each person saw it.

What is reach?

Reach counts how many different people saw your ad. If one person sees it five times, they still count as one in reach. Ad platforms such as Meta and TikTok report reach for every campaign, ad set and ad, usually estimated from logged-in accounts. Reach matters because it shows how far your message has spread, which is especially useful when launching a product, building awareness or entering a new market. It also explains performance changes. When reach stops growing but spend continues, the same people see your ads more often, which raises frequency and can lead to ad fatigue, rising costs and falling results.

How to calculate reach

Ad platforms calculate reach for you, but it is linked to two other numbers. Reach equals impressions divided by frequency, where frequency is the average number of times each person saw the ad. For example, if an ad earned 60,000 impressions with an average frequency of 3, its reach was 60,000 divided by 3, or 20,000 people. You can also estimate what share of an audience you reached: if your target audience is 200,000 people and reach is 20,000, you reached 10% of it. Note that reach across separate campaigns cannot simply be added together, because the same person may have seen ads from more than one campaign.

What is a good reach?

There is no single good reach number, because it depends on your budget, the size of your audience and your goal. A small retargeting campaign may reach only a few thousand people and still be very profitable, while a broad prospecting campaign might reach hundreds of thousands. A better check is how reach behaves over time. Healthy prospecting campaigns usually keep finding new people as budget grows. If reach plateaus and frequency climbs, the audience may be too narrow or the creative may be tired. The ideal frequency varies by niche and campaign type, so watch your own results rather than chasing a fixed target.

How to improve reach

Widen your audience by loosening narrow interest targeting or using broad targeting, which gives the platform more people to find. Turn on automatic placements so ads can appear in feeds, stories and reels across apps. Raise budget gradually on campaigns that perform well. Refresh creative often, since new ads tend to win more auctions and reach new people. Use reach-focused objectives when awareness, not immediate sales, is the goal. Lower CPM by improving engagement, because cheaper impressions buy more unique viewers. Remember that in Meta’s public Ad Library, reach figures are shown only for ads delivered in the EU and for political ads, so outside data on competitors’ reach is limited.

Reach vs impressions

Reach counts unique people. Impressions count every time an ad is shown, including repeats to the same person. If 1,000 people each see an ad twice, reach is 1,000 and impressions are 2,000. Impressions divided by reach gives frequency. Reach tells you how wide your audience is. Impressions tell you how much total exposure you bought. Looking at both together shows whether you are spreading your message to new people or repeating it to the same ones. A rising reach with steady frequency usually means a campaign is still finding fresh, new buyers.

Questions

Why is my reach lower than my impressions?
Because impressions count every display, including repeat views by the same person, while reach counts each person once. The gap between them is frequency, the average number of times each person saw the ad.
Can I see a competitor’s ad reach?
Only partly. Meta’s Ad Library shows reach estimates for ads delivered in the EU and for political or social issue ads. For most other ads, reach and spend are not shown publicly.
